Ilan Chabay

Director of the Gothenburg Center for PLUS (gcPLUS), Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

Ilan Chabay is Erna & Victor Hasselblad Professor of Public Learning and Understanding of Science (PLUS) and director of the Gothenburg Center for PLUS (gcPLUS), Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. He is also the founding director of the Gothenburg Center for PLUS (gcPLUS) at Chalmers University of Technology. The mission of gcPLUS is understanding and facilitating how the public learns and uses science and technology needed to build a sustainable global society. Dr. Chabay has developed gcPLUS into a dynamic hub between researchers and practitioners and a multi-disciplinary collaborative research organization involving the natural and social sciences and humanities. The focus of gcPLUS is on supporting movement toward global sustainability by conducting research and public outreach activities related to: 1) science in relation to governance, 2) building societal capacity for innovation, and 3) facilitating inclusion of a wide spectrum of people across cultures who have not been adequately represented and supported in adapting appropriate sustainable practices to their circumstances and livelihoods.
With colleagues and students, he is conducting several concurrent research projects, including: (1) motivations for and barriers to genuine dialogues on science and its social implications between scientists and the public, (2) facilitating governance of Baltic Sea fisheries by improving communication among stakeholders, (3) public understanding of mental and somatic health and its impact on medical interventions, and (4) science literacy for sustainable practices - in the broad sense of the understanding and use of science relevant to jobs, health, environment, and education - among migrant workers and their children in rural and urban China. Field work is being undertaken by colleagues in China in a collaborative partnership established in November 2007 with Sun Yat-Sen University School of Government in Guangzhou, China and the Chinese Research Institute for Science Popularization in Beijing. Dr. Chabay plans to extend these studies to economic immigrants coming into the developed countries.
Dr. Chabay is a member of the International Scientific Committee with responsibility for oversight of the International Human Dimensions Programme for Global Environmental Change (IHDP.org, which is sponsored by the UN University, International Council on Science - ICSU, and International Social Science Council - ISSC). He and Professor Miranda Schreurs of the Freie Universität Berlin are the co-chairs for the organization and development of a new 10 year cross-cutting initiative in IHDP on “Knowledge, Learning, and Societal Change in the Transition to a Sustainable Future.” After enjoying a productive initial career as a research scientist in chemical physics, Ilan has been working for many years on science communication and public learning and understanding of science. The two strands of this earlier work have been the creation of innovative science learning experiences, including exhibitions, games, and toys, and the implementation of new strategies to engage children and adults from diverse communities in the social issues, as well as the ideas and fun of science. He has served as an advisor and consultant to government agencies, media companies, design firms, schools, and museums worldwide.
